Summer Season Programme 2021 Schedule – update

Our Summer Season commenced during April with RBKA On-Line activities.

The Basic Assessment Study Group commenced weekly online meetings on Tuesday 6th April, at 7pm, with subsequent sessions each Monday at 7pm.

The first phase (all on-line) of Weekly Summer Members Meetings provided live inspections of a colony beamed via Zoom followed by Q&A’s.

The current second phase is providing the opportunity for the Basic Assessment Study Group to conduct colony inspections with Hive Tutors; as well as maintaining on-line Zoom meetings for Q&A’s and exchanges of advice and guidance for all other members to participate in.

Winter Talks Programme 2020/21 Schedule

Our RBKA On-Line Winter Talks Programme commences on the 7th October … in place of previously ‘normal’ monthly Evening Wednesday meetings at the Woodhatch Centre … every first Wednesday of the month through to and including March 2021

Invitations and joining instructions to join each Zoom Meeting are delivered about 5 days beforehand from Jim Wynn <noreply@membershipservices.org.uk> to ALL our RBKA paid-up members with email addresses.  The instructions are ESSENTIAL for you to follow to be able to either log-in via smartphone or computer for 2-way video & audio capability, or by standard phone for audio only.  Reminders may also be sent on the day of, or the day before each Zoom Meeting.

Wednesday 3rd March – No. 29 ‘Preparing for Spring’ presented by Simon Ford, with Q&A’s to follow. Commences at 7:00pm.

Wednesday 3rd February – No. 28 ‘In Self Defence’ presented by Celia Davis followed by Q&A’s. Commences at 7:00pm.

Wednesday 6th January – No. 27 ‘Recognising and Addressing Queen Events’ a new talk presented by Jamie Ellis Phd from Florida, USA. Commences at 7:00pm

Wednesday 2nd December – No. 26 ‘Winter Feed and Treatments’ presented by Adam Leitch + we are joined by Richard and Jane Ridler from Bees Abroad to hear the Bees Abroad Donation total being announced + Q&A’s to follow. Commences at 7:00pm (Recording to be published)

Wednesday 4th November – RBKA’s AGM Commences at 7:30pm (This event was not recorded for catch-up viewing.)

Wednesday 7th October – No. 25 ‘Products of the Hive’. Numerous members talk about how they produce their speciality products. Possible inspiration to keep occupied during the winter months, followed by Q&A’s. Commences at 7:00pm.

Each RBKA OnLine ‘meeting’ will commence promptly at the scheduled time, proceeded only by a very few minutes of general notices and announcements. Do aim to log into the Zoom conference 5 to 10 minutes before the published start time to ensure your video and audio settings are working OK and to not miss any announcements and introductions.

Note that a new, unique, Meeting ID will be issued ahead of each successive RBKA On-Line Meeting via Zoom.

RBKA On-Line Meetings – Usage Guidance

The power of on-line Video and/or Audio conferencing is being utilised to bring RBKA’s Education Programme … and more … direct to you in your home.

To help you the get the most from the the experience, Jim Wynn has produced a few guidelines, tips and examples of the Zoom screens you will encounter.

Look for emails from RBKA-online@hotmail.com arriving in your Inbox during the weeks ahead.

They will be providing invitations and unique links to conference sessions.

Due to the increased frequency with which we will be needing to circulate virtual meeting invitations and notices to all our members by email, Reigate Beekeepers has commenced using Mailchimp as a secure means of storing and using an email circulation list derived from our Membership records. Please be assured that we will continue to ONLY use email addresses that you have provided in the communication of Reigate Beekeepers activities and events.

  • Wednesday 30th September – No. 24 ‘Preparing for Winter’ Guidance about what to be doing to ensure your colonies get throeugh the winter ahead, presented by Geoff Blay and our other Master Beekeepers , followed by Q&A’s with our panel of Master Beekeepers and other experienced Members. Commences at 7:00pm.
  • Wednesday 23rd September – No. 23 ‘Perilous Journeys – how do bees avoid crashing or getting lost’ by guest presenter Joanna Brebner, Phd student at Queen Mary University of London, working on a project ‘Bee Navigation and Orientation’; with Q&A’s to follow. Commences at 7:00pm
  • Wednesday 16th September – No. 22 ‘How to Jar Your Honey‘. Demonstrated by Anna Slade, with Q&A’s to follow. Commences at 7.00pm
  • Wednesday 9th September – No. 21 ‘Bee Friendly Plants‘ presented by Mark Tuson, RHS , with Q&A’s to follow. Commences at 7.00pm
  • Wednesday 2nd September – No. 20 ‘These Work & Cost Next to Nothing’. Presented by various members, contributors will show and describe pet widgets, gizmo’s and diy builds used in their beekeeping, with Q&A’s to follow. Commences at 7.00pm
  • Wednesday 26th August – No. 19 ‘Beekeeping this September’ Guidance about what to be looking out for in nature and your colonies, presented by Bob Maurer, Master Beekeeper, followed by Q&A’s with other experienced Members. Commences at 7:00pm.
  • Wednesday 19th August – No. 18 ‘Knowing Your Enemy’ a talk about tracking down and confronting the Yellow Legged Hornets, presented by guest speaker Lynne Ingram, Master beekeeper, from the Somerset AHAT, who has been working with scientists from Exeter University and Jersey beekeepers.  With Q&A’s to follow. Commences at 7.00pm
  • Wednesday 12th August – No. 17 ‘Showing & Telling about My Apiary’ More presentations of their own apiaries by Peter Scroggs, Sue Scales, Gavin & Axel, with Q&A’s to follow. Commences at 7:00pm
  • Wednesday 5th August – No. 16 ‘First Aid and Health & Safety’ presented by Dr Andrew Carne, NHS Chief Clinical Information Officer. With Q&A’s to follow. Commences at 7.00pm
  • Wednesday 29th July – No. 15 ‘A Conversation with Stephen Fleming’ The Co editor of BeeCraft will chat about the history of BeeCraft and stories of beekeeping, with Vince ‘Parky’ Gallo taking the part of chat show host; followed by Q&A’s with our Master Beekeepers and other experienced Members adding to the answers offered to YOUR questions. Commences at 7:00pm.
  • Wednesday 22nd July – No. 14 ‘Extraction’ Instruction and demonstrations about how to literally get the best out of your supers, presented by Andrew Cornwall, with Q&A’s to follow. Commences at 7:00pm.
  • Wednesday 15th July – No. 13 ‘Viruses‘ A talk and presentation provide by guest speaker Pam Hunter, (Master Beekeeper, member of BIBBA and the Central Association of Bee-Keepers, BBKA Manager of Research, Technical and Environmental matters and a past Chair of the BBKA Examinations Board), with Q&A’s to follow. Commences at 7:00pm.
  • Wednesday 8th July – No. 12 ‘How to Get Entries Ready for Showing’ Guidance and Tips for the preparation and presentation of Honey Show exhibits, presented by Celia Perry, with Q&A’s to follow. Commences at 7:00pm.
  • Wednesday 1st July – No. 11 ‘Queen Rearing’ A talk and presentation provided by Bob Maurer, with Q&A’s to follow. Commences at 7:00pm.
  • Wednesday 24th June – No. 10 ‘ Beekeeping this July’ Guidance about what to be looking out for in nature and your colonies, presented by Geoff Blay, followed by Q&A’s with our panel of our Master Beekeepers and other experienced Members. Commences at 7:00pm.
  • Wednesday 17th June – No. 9 ‘Showing & Telling about My Apiary’ Presentations by Suzy Stevens, Colin Clement & Karen Ford, with Q&A’s to follow and maybe a Quiz for afters. Commences at 7:00pm
  • Wednesday 10th June – No. 8 ‘Life Cycle and Anatomy’ Presentation by Celia Perry, with Q&A’s to follow.Commences at 7:00pm
  • Wednesday 3rd June – No. 7 ‘Varroa Control with a DIY Queen Cage’ Presentation by Vince Gallo, building on a Winter Talk last December by Steve Riley (Westerham BKA’s Education Officer) about a project evaluating chemical free control of varroa. Commences at 7:00pm
  • Wednesday 27th May – No. 6 ‘Beekeeping this June’. Guidance about what to be looking out for in nature and your colonies, presented by Simon Ford,followed by Q&A’s with our panel of our Master Beekeepers and other experienced Members. Commences at 7:00pm.
  • Wednesday 20th May – No. 5 ‘Handling Skills’ – practical advice about the approach to basic manipulation methods presented by Master Beekeeper Geoff Blay, (A sequel to Geoff’s well received ‘pre Coronavirus’ March 4th Winter Meeting presentation at Henfold.) Commences at 7:00pm
  • Wednesday 13th May – No. 4 ‘Virtual Tour of Vince Gallo’s Apiary’, Vince has been taking videos of his apiary and will share his insights and also talk about his exciting bee research. Commences at 7:00pm
  • Wednesday 6th May – No. 3 ‘What’s going on in my Hive?’ – A simple guide to recognising pests and diseases. Presented by Master Beekeeper, Bob Maurer who promises to not be too technical and no latin names!
    Commences at 7:00pm
  • Wednesday 29th April – No. 2 ‘Beekeeping this May’, Guidance about what to be looking out for in nature and your colonies, presented by Adam Leitch, Master Beekeeper, NDB, followed by Q&A’s hosted by a panel of all our Master Beekeepers, Celia Perry, Bob Maurer, Geoff Blay and Adam Leitch. Commences at 7:00pm.
  • Wednesday 22nd April – No. 1 ‘Swarms’,  An illustrated talk by Vince Gallo; commences at 7:00pm and will be followed by Q&A’s arising, from participating viewers and listeners
