Topping-Out in style at the BBQ

B BBQ 2015 MMThe sunny and warm evening of 11th July was enjoyed by 50 or so members, partners, friends and special guests for our Summer BBQ at the Henfold Copse apiary.

With the charcoals glowing nicely and the gas grills fired up, the cooking of an assortment of foods, including steaks, chops, burgers, kebabs and of course, bangers, was soon underway.

Whilst set out under the big white marque were salad dishes aplenty that had been brought by all to share, providing a broad selection of accompaniments to the cooked food. A splendid range of shared desserts to follow also served to challenge the strongest of wills.

A BBQ 2015 RBHosted by our Chairman Andrew Buchanan, a number of guests were invited to this particularly special occasion to witness the formal Topping-Out of our new Pavilion. These included our own Malcolm Broatch – President of Reigate Beekeepers Association, accompanied by his wife Mary, and Bob Maurer – Chairman of Surrey Beekeepers Association, with his wife Erica; Councillor Patsy Shillinglaw – Reigate & Banstead District Council and her son Tom;  Tim Lovett – President of Surrey Beekeepers Association & BBKA Director of Public Affairs;  Sandra Rickwood – Secretary of Surrey Beekeepers Association, Surrey BKA Trustee & Weybridge BKA Teaching Apiary Manager;   Martin Major – Weybridge member, SBKA Council member and Surrey BKA Webmaster;  Geoff Cooper – Weybridge BKA and Newsletter Editor;  Marion Cooper – Weybridge BKA Trustee and Education Coordinator;  Rob Chisholm – Rowtown Apiary Manager & Swarm Coordinator and his wife Chris, both Weybridge BKA members.

With hungers satisfied, the evening’s formal proceedings were commenced by our Chairman.

Glasses were charged with Prosecco and served to all present. And with Bob Maurer looking on, Andrew said a few words about our magnificent new building. A construction made possibly by the generous contributions from many members, including a few very large ones that have enabled the project to move forward at a faster pace than had ever been expected.

25 BBQ 2015 RBThen with everyone raising their glass, our President Malcolm Broatch, unveiled the Topping Out plaque … a splendid mounted sculpture in copper of a skep made by RBKA Member Mike Lowe.

The events were being captured for posterity jointly by Martin Major (Weybridge Division) , who has kindly given permission to use his photos here, and by Richard Bradfield.

They are presented in the gallery slide show below.
